Triphala means "three fruits", and that is exactly what it is: amalaki, bibhitaki and haritaki, dried and milled together in the classical proportion. It is probably the single best-known formulation in Ayurveda, and it has been prepared the same way for centuries. The taste is genuinely unusual — Ayurveda describes triphala as carrying five of the six tastes at once, and you can pick out sour, bitter and astringent quite distinctly. Most people take it in warm water at night rather than trying to enjoy it.
The three fruits are selected separately from trusted growers, then cleaned, dried and milled before being blended in the traditional proportion under controlled conditions.
