Basil seeds — sabja or tukmaria — are small black seeds that swell within minutes of touching water, each one wrapping itself in a translucent grey jelly with the dark centre still visible. They soak far faster than chia and hold a firmer, more distinct texture. That quick-swelling jelly is why sabja has been a fixture of Indian summer drinks for generations: falooda, rose sherbet, nimbu paani and lassi all use it for its cooling body and the pleasing pop it gives each sip.

How to Use
- Falooda, rose sherbet and traditional summer coolers
- Stirred into nimbu paani, lemonade and jaljeera
- Added to lassi, buttermilk and cold milk drinks
- Spooned into puddings, jellies and kulfi
- Mixed into fruit juices and iced teas
- Stirred into curd or yoghurt as a cooling accompaniment
Directions of Use
- Soak 1 teaspoon (about 5 g) in half a cup of water for 10 to 15 minutes.
- They swell quickly — far faster than chia, and to roughly 20–30 times their dry volume.
- Always soak before consuming; never take them dry.
- Once fully swollen and translucent, stir into your drink or dessert.
- A typical serving is 1–2 teaspoons a day.
- Drink plenty of water alongside, as the seeds are high in fibre.
- Store dry seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
